Arena of the Future brings wireless power to Italy’s highways
In Italy, history was made when Electreon’s Electric Road System powered an Iveco e-bus and a Fiat 500 passenger car side by side on a highway—the world’s first system to charge both in motion.
The milestone is part of the ongoing Arena of the Future project, a collaboration between Brebemi A35 toll-road operator and Electreon, with the system deployed on a dedicated test track.
The results were clear: both vehicles, fitted with Electreon’s wireless receivers, ended their runs with more charge than they started. The Fiat 500 climbed from 22% to 48% while cruising, and the Iveco e-bus drove three days straight without losing power. On certain routes, this could mean no need for overnight charging at all. Electreon’s tech makes e-mobility effortless—removing range anxiety, cutting costs, and proving EVs can cruise highways without draining their batteries.
The project also showed the system’s flexibility: a single platform can power vehicles big and small, turning toll roads into invisible charging assets.
Next, the plan is to extend the system along Brebemi’s A35 toll road between Brescia and Milan, supporting both buses and passenger cars, while adding e-vans and stationary charging to the mix. The model is also being tested for feasibility: would drivers already paying a toll add a small fee to charge as they drive? This Road as a Service (RaaS) approach builds on Electreon’s proven success worldwide—showing how roads themselves can become shared charging networks that reliably deliver energy to every EV.
