Ovnat terminal turns boarding bays into wireless battery boosts

Opportunity charging transforms boarding moments into power
At the Ovnat terminal in Petah Tikva—a busy suburb in Israel’s central region—buses now top up wirelessly using Electreon’s technology embedded beneath the passenger boarding bays. This second collaboration with Electra Afikim builds on 2 years of proven success at the Rosh HaAyin depot, where 23 e-buses charge wirelessly day and night. That track record convinced the operator to expand its use of Electreon’s solution. The project brings together government funding, Electra Afikim supplying the buses, and Electreon delivering a turnkey wireless charging system as part of a wider cluster serving surrounding suburbs.
Now, Ovnat’s smart setup will power both the existing fleet and new factory-equipped e-buses with Electreon’s tech preinstalled—ready to start charging the moment they pull into the bays.
Here, Electreon’s opportunity charging model turns everyday pauses into power, giving operators a clear edge in uptime, efficiency, and flexibility. Buses charge automatically during boarding and unloading—pauses that can last a few minutes at this busy start-and-end station. These short top-ups, repeated many times a day, add up to significant charging time. The payoff? Extended driving range, healthier batteries, and less reliance on oversized packs. And because charging is spread across the day, operators can rely on smaller grid connections, tap into lower electricity rates, and avoid long, costly sessions.
The system runs fully autonomously with no driver involvement, delivering seamless, continuous charging. Compact and safely housed underground, it’s quiet, emission-free, and perfectly suited for dense urban areas—even those blended with residential zones. Electreon’s software platform also tracks fleet metrics, enabling data-driven operations and cost-effective off-peak charging.
Looking ahead, the Ovnat project is a stepping stone in Electra Afikim’s vision to fully electrify its fleet, with more factory-equipped e-buses joining over time. And with Electreon’s dynamic, scalable infrastructure, the road ahead points to an even bigger leap: extending charging along bus routes for true in-motion power.
What our partners are saying
Afikim
"After more than a year of successful operation in Rosh HaAyin, during which we proved that the implementation of wireless charging enables optimal utilization of our bus fleet—we chose to expand the use of this technology to the Ovnat terminal as well. Choosing Electreon again is no coincidence—it’s a solution that has proven itself in the field, both operationally and in terms of cost reduction and service improvement. This move aligns with our vision to fully electrify Afikim’s fleet and to carry out this transition in a responsible, smart, and data-driven manner."
