Opportunity charging adds up to ∼100 km of extra range per bus
At Electra Afikim’s depot, 23 buses power up wirelessly overnight—seamless charging hidden just beneath the surface. Come morning, the fleet is fully ready for the rush. Electra Afikim, the country’s fourth-largest public bus operator, is proving that wireless charging keeps fleets moving farther, and more efficiently.
The project, funded by Israel’s Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety together with the Rosh HaAyin Municipality, has already delivered impressive results: about 60 km of extra range per bus daily, 89.3% efficiency, 99% uptime, with many buses ending the day with nearly half their battery still full. By removing plug-ins, freeing space, and offering a modular design that fits any depot, the system reduces standby fleet needs
By day the depot doubles as a charging hub—buses roll in for quick top-ups during breaks or maintenance. This “opportunity charging” adds up to ∼100 km of extra range per bus, cuts peak power demand and costly grid connections by more than half, and delivers significant savings.
After more than 1.5 years of strong, reliable service, the operator is expanding with a second major project: deploying Electreon’s wireless charging beneath passenger boarding bays at the Ovnat bus terminal in Petah Tikva. This next step will boost daytime charging from 3% to as much as 12% of fleet demand, giving buses more range, fewer backup needs, and greater flexibility on the road.

What our partners are saying
Oded Cohen
CEO of Electra Afikim
“As a leading public
transportation company, we are turning towards green energy. Since the
transition to electrification depends on the allocation of infrastructure, powerful
grid connections and prolonged bureaucracy, we were happy to partner with
Electreon, which offers a more cost-effective and accessible alternative to
charging electric buses.”
Scaling electric transit or just getting started? Electreon’s wireless tech fits any depot—let’s connect.
