Wireless power for Karlsruhe’s port shuttle commute

In Karlsruhe, a staff shuttle bus charges effortlessly as it runs its daily route on a road powered by Electreon’s wireless technology. This “smart” stretch connects the city’s main transit hub with EnBW’s new training center at the port. Led by EnBW—one of Germany’s largest energy and e-mobility providers—the project shows how scalable, cable-free public transport can work in everyday life.
Together with several partners, Electreon launched Germany’s first wireless Electric Road System (ERS) to power a bus line. The shuttle, equipped with Electreon’s receivers, charges both while parked and while driving. Scheduled during peak hours, it demonstrated the efficiency of Electreon’s dynamic and stationary charging—and kicked off a collaboration with road builder Eurovia to bring the technology to more sites in Germany, France, and Belgium.
Building on this success, the project now aims to extend the ERS further into the city, adding billing and metering features along with new vehicle types like light commercial vans.
This Karlsruhe showcase became a springboard for Electreon’s next project in Balingen—where a wirelessly powered e-bus blends seamlessly into public traffic. It also opened the door for global adoption of Electreon’s wireless technology, with integration into new vehicle platforms by leading automotive OEMs.
