Smartroad Gotland: Validating the world’s first public wireless electric

Buss och lastbil HS 5

The Smartroad Gotland project, deployed on Gotland Island, Sweden, represents the world’s first public wireless inductive Electric Road System (ERS) for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and led by Electreon along with a multi-partner consortium, this groundbreaking initiative evaluated the technical, economic, and logistical viability of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) to accelerate the transition toward net-zero road freight. Spanning 1.65 km of wireless electric roadway, the system integrated solar generation and a 330 kWh battery energy storage system to power real-world operations. SRG achieved landmark global milestones, including the world’s first simultaneous wireless charging of two distinct commercial vehicles—a 40-ton electric truck and a commercial bus—and transferred 100 kW of continuous power to heavy trucks driving at speeds up to 80 km/h. Additionally, the system seamlessly supported regular passenger transit on Flygbussarna’s airport bus route.

Rigorous four-year testing (2019–2023) confirmed the technology’s durability without compromising power delivery. In collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration, the technology was installed in the island of Gotland, and tested in extreme winter conditions down to -23 °C. Independent third-party evaluations verified that placing in-road copper coils just centimeters beneath the asphalt causes no negative impact on road lifespan, structure, or standard maintenance. Comprehensive environmental and electromagnetic assessments confirmed full operational safety while maintaining the historic integrity of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

By demonstrating reliable, high-power dynamic charging and reduced on-board vehicle battery requirements, Smartroad Gotland proves that wireless electric roads provide a scalable, sustainable pathway for decarbonizing global transport fleets.
